Copper & Copper Nickel — Material Overview

Copper combines the best electrical and thermal conductivity of any commercial metal with natural corrosion resistance in water and most atmospheres. C11000 (ETP) is the standard high-conductivity grade; C10200 (OFHC) is oxygen-free for electronic and hydrogen-service applications.

Copper-nickel alloys add nickel (and iron and manganese in controlled amounts) for seawater corrosion resistance, biofouling resistance and strength retention at temperature — the standard materials for ship seawater lines, condensers and desalination plants. The 90/10 (C70600) grade handles most duty; 70/30 (C71500) is specified for higher strength and velocity. ACERO ALLOYS also supplies copper connectors and jumpers for earthing and bonding.

Available Grades

The grades below are the ones most often asked for. Each grade stays on this page — the material-first way to browse.

Copper C11000 (ETP)

UNS C11000 EN / W.Nr. 2.0090

Electrolytic tough-pitch copper — 99.9% minimum, 100% IACS conductivity. Busbars, conductors, roofing, plumbing and general fabrication.

Copper C10200 (OFHC)

UNS C10200

Oxygen-free high-conductivity copper — no copper oxide inclusions, so it is weldable and hydrogen-safe. Electronic components, waveguides, vacuum and hydrogen-cooled generator windings.

CuNi 90/10 (C70600)

UNS C70600 EN / W.Nr. 2.0872

90% copper 10% nickel with iron and manganese — the standard seawater alloy for shipboard piping, condensers and desalination. Excellent biofouling resistance and weldability.

CuNi 70/30 (C71500)

UNS C71500 EN / W.Nr. 2.0882

70% copper 30% nickel — higher strength, better erosion and impingement resistance for higher-velocity seawater and naval condenser duty.

Frequently Asked Questions

CuNi 90/10 or 70/30 — which do I need?

90/10 covers most seawater cooling and shipboard piping: it is economical and weldable. Choose 70/30 where water velocity is higher (pump discharges, condenser inlets) or where its extra strength and erosion resistance pay for itself in thinner walls.

Why is copper-nickel used in seawater?

It resists chloride corrosion, inhibits marine biofouling (barnacles and slime attach far less than to other metals) and retains strength and ductility at seawater temperatures — a combination stainless steels cannot match in long-term immersion.

What is the difference between ETP and OFHC copper?

ETP (C11000) contains 0.02–0.04% oxygen as copper oxide — fine for most electrical and building uses. OFHC (C10200) is oxygen-free, so it can be welded and brazed without hydrogen embrittlement and suits vacuum, electronic and high-integrity applications.

Do you supply copper jumpers and earthing connectors?

Yes — copper connectors, jumpers, bonding strips and earthing products are one of our listed product forms. Send the drawing or standard requirement for quotation.

Are copper pipes heavier than brass?

Copper (8.94 g/cm³) is slightly denser than cartridge brass (8.53 g/cm³). Use our pipe weight calculator for theoretical weights of any copper alloy.
