Pipe Weight Calculator
Theoretical pipe weight from outside diameter, wall thickness, length and material — computed live, with PDF download and email options.
Theoretical weight from nominal dimensions and the indicative family density. For steel pipe the formula reduces to the familiar W (kg/m) ≈ 0.02466 × t × (OD − t). Inputs can be entered in mm/m or in/ft — results are always shown in metric with the imperial equivalent.
Accuracy disclaimer: theoretical weights from nominal dimensions and indicative family densities. Actual pieces vary within manufacturing tolerances and the actual chemistry of the melt. Use results for estimation, freight planning and budgeting only — purchase and invoicing use the actual weighed figures and the EN 10204 mill test certificate for the lot.
How It Works
The pipe cross-section is an annulus: area = π/4 × (OD² − ID²) = π × t × (OD − t), with ID = OD − 2t. Multiplying the area (mm²) by the density (kg/m³) and dividing by 10⁶ gives kilograms per metre; the length and quantity give the total. Wall thickness must be less than half the OD — the calculator refuses anything else rather than returning a nonsense number.
Material density is the indicative family value from our material pages (8000 kg/m³ for stainless, 7850 for carbon and alloy steel, 7800 for duplex, and so on). For an alloy outside the list, choose Custom density… and enter the value from the grade datasheet.
NPS to Outside Diameter (ASME B36.10M)
Common nominal pipe sizes with their actual outside diameters — OD is fixed by NPS, independent of schedule:
| NPS | OD (mm) | NPS | OD (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | 21.3 | 2 1/2" | 73.0 |
| 3/4" | 26.7 | 3" | 88.9 |
| 1" | 33.4 | 4" | 114.3 |
| 1 1/4" | 42.2 | 6" | 168.3 |
| 1 1/2" | 48.3 | 8" | 219.1 |
| 2" | 60.3 | 10" | 273.0 |
| 2 1/2" | 73.0 | 12" | 323.8 |
OD values are the standard ASME B36.10M fixed outside diameters; wall thickness varies by schedule (STD/40, XS/80…). Theoretical weights differ from chart weights where charts use schedule-specific tolerances.
